Kedoshim | קדושים | “Holy”

Deu 6:4  שׁמע  ישׂראל  יהוה  אלהינו  יהוה  אחד׃

Deu 6:4  “Hear, O Yisra’ĕl: יהוה our Elohim, יהוה is one!

Kedoshim, K’doshim, or Qedoshim (קְדֹשִׁים‎ — Hebrew for “holy ones,” the 14th word, and the first distinctive word, in the parashah) is the 30th weekly Torah portion (פָּרָשָׁה‎, parashah) in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading and the seventh in the Book of Leviticus. It constitutes Leviticus 19:1–20:27. The parashah is made up of 3,229 Hebrew letters, 868 Hebrew words, and 64 verses, and can occupy about 109 lines in a Torah Scroll (סֵפֶר תּוֹרָה‎, Sefer Torah).

Jews generally read it in late April or May. The lunisolar Hebrew calendar contains up to 55 weeks, the exact number varying between 50 in common years and 54 or 55 in leap years. In leap years (for example, 2019, 2022, and 2024), parashah Kedoshim is read separately. In common years (for example, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2023, 2025, and 2026), parashah Kedoshim is combined with the previous parashah, Acharei Mot, to help achieve the needed number of weekly readings. Some Conservative congregations substitute readings from part of the parashah, Leviticus 19, for the traditional reading of Leviticus 18 in the Yom Kippur Minchah service. And in the standard Reform High Holidays prayerbook (מחזור‎, machzor), Leviticus 19:1–4, 9–18, and 32–37 are the Torah readings for the afternoon Yom Kippur service.

Kodashim is also the name of the fifth order in the Mishnah, Tosefta, and Babylonian Talmud. The term “kedoshim” is sometimes also used to refer to the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, whom some call “kedoshim” because they fulfilled the mitzvah of Kiddush Hashem.

Prophets: Ezekiel 20:1-20

Eze 20:1  And it came to be in the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth of the month, that certain of the elders of Yisra’ĕl came to inquire of יהוה, and sat before me.

Eze 20:2  And the word of יהוה came to me, saying,

Eze 20:3  “Son of man, speak to the elders of Yisra’ĕl, and say to them, ‘Thus said the Master יהוה, “Have you come to inquire of Me? As I live, I am not being inquired of by you,” declares the Master יהוה.’

Eze 20:4  “Judge them, son of man, judge them! Make known to them the abominations of their fathers.

Eze 20:5  “And you shall say to them, ‘Thus said the Master יהוה, “On the day when I chose Yisra’ĕl and lifted My hand in an oath to the seed of the house of Yaʽaqoḇ, and made Myself known to them in the land of Mitsrayim, I lifted My hand in an oath to them, saying, ‘I am יהוה your Elohim.’

Eze 20:6  “On that day I lifted My hand in an oath to them, to bring them out of the land of Mitsrayim into a land that I had searched out for them, flowing with milk and honey, the splendour of all lands.

Eze 20:7  “And I said to them, ‘Each one of you, throw away the abominations which are before his eyes, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Mitsrayim! I am יהוה your Elohim.’

Eze 20:8  “But they rebelled against Me, and would not obey Me. All of them did not throw away the abominations which were before their eyes, nor did they forsake the idols of Mitsrayim. So I resolved to pour out My wrath on them to complete My displeasure against them in the midst of the land of Mitsrayim.

Eze 20:9  “But I acted for My Name’s sake, that it should not be profaned before the eyes of the gentiles among whom they were – before whose eyes I had made Myself known to them, to bring them out of the land of Mitsrayim.

Eze 20:10  “So I took them out of the land of Mitsrayim, and I brought them into the wilderness.

Eze 20:11  “And I gave them My laws and showed them My right-rulings, ‘which, if a man does, he shall live by them.’

Eze 20:12  “And I also gave them My Sabbaths, to be a sign1 between them and Me, to know that I am יהוה who sets them apart. Footnote: 1See Ex. 31:13-17.

Exo 31:13  “And you, speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl, saying, ‘My Sabbaths you are to guard, by all means, for it is a sign1 between Me and you throughout your generations, to know that I, יהוה, am setting you apart.

Exo 31:14  ‘And you shall guard the Sabbath, for it is set-apart to you. Everyone who profanes it shall certainly be put to death, for anyone who does work on it, that being shall be cut off from among his people.

Exo 31:15  ‘Six days work is done, and on the seventh is a Sabbath of rest, set-apart to יהוה. Everyone doing work on the Sabbath day shall certainly be put to death.

Exo 31:16  ‘And the children of Yisra’ĕl shall guard the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant.

Exo 31:17  ‘Between Me and the children of Yisra’ĕl it is a sign forever. For in six days יהוה made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.’ ”

Footnote: 1The only sign of יהוה setting us apart, the only sign of the everlasting covenant, is His Sabbaths, one of them being the seventh day Sabbath. This is repeated in Ezek. 20:12 & 20.

Eze 20:13  “But the house of Yisra’ĕl rebelled against Me in the wilderness. They did not walk in My laws, and they rejected My right-rulings, which, if a man does, he shall live by them. And they greatly profaned My Sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out My wrath on them in the wilderness, to consume them.

Eze 20:14  “But I acted for My Name’s sake, not to profane it before the gentiles, before whose eyes I had brought them out.

Eze 20:15  “And I Myself also lifted My hand in an oath to them in the wilderness, not to bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, the splendour of all lands,

Eze 20:16  because they rejected My right-rulings and did not walk in My laws, and they profaned My Sabbaths. For their heart went after their idols.

Eze 20:17  “And My eye pardoned them, from destroying them. And I did not make an end of them in the wilderness.

Eze 20:18  “And I said to their children in the wilderness, ‘Do not walk in the laws of your fathers, nor observe their rulings, nor defile yourselves with their idols.

Eze 20:19  ‘I am יהוה your Elohim. Walk in My laws, and guard My right-rulings, and do them.

Eze 20:20  ‘And set apart My Sabbaths, and they shall be a sign between Me and you, to know that I am יהוה your Elohim.’

Amos 9:7-15

Amo 9:7  “Are you not like the people of Kush to Me, O children of Yisra’ĕl?” declares יהוה. “Did I not bring up Yisra’ĕl from the land of Mitsrayim, and the Philistines from Kaphtor, and Aram from Qir?

Amo 9:8  “Look, the eyes of the Master יהוה are on the sinful reign1, and I shall destroy it from the face of the earth, except that, I do not completely destroy the house of Yaʽaqoḇ,” declares יהוה. Footnote: 1Isa. 34:2, Jer. 30:11, Jer. 46:28, Dan. 2:44, Zeph. 3:8, Hag. 2:22, Lk. 4:5-6.

Amo 9:9  “For look, I am commanding, and I shall sift the house of Yisra’ĕl among all the gentiles, as one sifts1 with a sieve, yet not a grain falls to the ground. Footnote: 1Or Shake – shakes.

Amo 9:10  “All the sinners of My people are going to die by the sword, those who are saying, ‘Evil does not overtake us nor meet us.’

Amo 9:11  “In that day I shall raise up the booth of Dawiḏ which has fallen down. And I shall repair its breaches and raise up its ruins. And I shall build it as in the days of old,

Amo 9:12  so that they possess the remnant of Eḏom1, and all the gentiles on whom My Name is called2,” declares יהוה who does this. Footnotes: 1The vowels which the Massoretes added later on makes this read Eom, but it was probably a mistake. It should be Aam, meaning mankind. 2Acts 15:16-17.

Amo 9:13  “Look, the days are coming,” declares יהוה, “that the ploughman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him who sows seed. And the mountains shall drip new wine, and all the hills melt.

Amo 9:14  “And I shall turn back the captivity of My people Yisra’ĕl. And they shall build the waste cities and inhabit them. And they shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them, and shall make gardens and eat their fruit.

Amo 9:15  “And I shall plant them on their own soil, and not uproot them any more from their own soil I have given them,” said יהוה your Elohim!

Isaiah 29:1-24

Isa 29:1  Woe to Ari’ĕl, to Ari’ĕl, the city where Dawiḏ dwelt! Add year to year, let festivals come around.

Isa 29:2  “And I shall distress Ari’ĕl, and there shall be mourning and sorrow, and it shall be to Me as Ari’ĕl.

Isa 29:3  “And I shall encamp against you all around, I shall lay siege against you with a mound, and I shall raise siege-works against you.

Isa 29:4  “And you shall be brought low and speak out of the ground, and your speech shall be low, out of the dust. And your voice shall be like a medium’s, out of the ground, and your speech whisper out of the dust.

Isa 29:5  “But the crowd of those strange to you shall be like fine dust, and the crowd of the ruthless ones as chaff blowing away. And it shall be in an instant, suddenly!”

Isa 29:6  You shall be visited by יהוה of hosts with thunder and earthquake and great noise, with whirlwind and storm, and flame of devouring fire.

Isa 29:7  Then the crowd of all the gentiles who fight against Ari’ĕl, even all who fight against her and her stronghold, and distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision.

Isa 29:8  And it shall be as when a hungry man dreams, and see, he eats; but he awakes, and his being is empty; or as when a thirsty man dreams, and see, he drinks; but he awakes, and see, he is faint, and his being is longing. Thus shall the crowd of all the gentiles be who fight against Mount Tsiyon.

Isa 29:9  Pause and wonder! Blind yourselves and be blind! They are drunk, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.

Isa 29:10  For יהוה has poured out on you the spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes, the prophets. And He has covered your heads, the seers.

Isa 29:11  And the entire vision is to you like the words of a book that is sealed, which men give to one who knows books, saying, “Read this, please.” And he said, “I am unable, for it is sealed.”

Isa 29:12  And the book is given to one who does not know books, saying, “Read this, please.” And he said, “I have not known books.”

Isa 29:13  And יהוה says, “Because this people has drawn near with its mouth, and with its lips they have esteemed Me, and it has kept its heart far from Me, and their fear of Me has become a command of men that is taught1! Footnote: 1Mt. 15:8-9, Mk. 7:6-7.

Isa 29:14  “Therefore, see, I am again doing a marvellous work among this people, a marvellous work and a wonder. And the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their clever men shall be hidden.”

Isa 29:15  Woe to those who seek deep to hide their counsel far from יהוה, and their works are in the dark; they say, “Who sees us?” and, “Who knows us?”

Isa 29:16  How perverse of you! Should the potter be reckoned as the clay? Should what is made say of its Maker, “He did not make me”? And what is formed say of Him who formed it, “He did not understand”?

Isa 29:17  Is it not yet a little while, and Leḇanon shall be turned into garden land, and garden land be reckoned as a forest?

Isa 29:18  And in that day the deaf shall hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of gloom, and out of darkness.

Isa 29:19  And the meek ones shall increase their joy in יהוה, and the poor among men rejoice in the Set-apart One of Yisra’ĕl.

Isa 29:20  For the ruthless one is brought to naught, the scorner is consumed, and all who watch for evil shall be cut off,

Isa 29:21  those who make a man to sin in word, and lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate, and turn aside the righteous with empty reasoning.

Isa 29:22  Therefore thus said יהוה, who ransomed Aḇraham, concerning the house of Yaʽaqoḇ, “Yaʽaqoḇ is no longer put to shame, no longer does his face grow pale.

Isa 29:23  “For when he sees his children, the work of My hands, in his midst, they shall set apart My Name, and set apart the Set-apart One of Yaʽaqoḇ, and fear the Elohim of Yisra’ĕl.

Isa 29:24  “And those who went astray in spirit shall come to understanding, and the grumblers accept instruction.”

Matthew 19:16-30

Mat 19:16  And see, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good shall I do to have everlasting life?”

Mat 19:17  And He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except One – Elohim. But if you wish to enter into life, guard the commands.”1 Footnote:1See Lk. 10:28, John 12:50, Rev. 22:14.

Mat 19:18  He said to Him, “Which?” And יהושע said, “ ‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’

Mat 19:19  ‘Respect your father and your mother,’ and ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ ”

Mat 19:20  The young man said to Him, “All these I have watched over from my youth, what do I still lack?”

Mat 19:21  יהושע said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven. And come, follow Me.”

Mat 19:22  And when the young man heard the word, he went away sad, because he had many possessions.

Mat 19:23  And יהושע said to His taught ones, “Truly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter into the reign of the heavens.

Mat 19:24  And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the reign of Elohim.”

Mat 19:25  And when His taught ones heard it, they were very astonished, saying, “Who then is able to be saved?”

Mat 19:26  And looking intently יהושע said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with Elohim all is possible.”

Mat 19:27  Then Kĕpha answering, said to Him, “See, we have left all and followed You. What then shall we have?”

Mat 19:28  And יהושע said to them, “Truly I say to you, when the Son of Aḏam sits on the throne of His esteem, you who have followed Me in the rebirth, shall also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Yisra’ĕl.

Mat 19:29  “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My Name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

Mat 19:30  “But many who are first shall be last, and the last first.

Mark 12:28-34

Mar 12:28  And one of the scribes coming near, hearing them reasoning together, knowing that He had answered them well, asked Him, “Which is the first command of all?”

Mar 12:29  And יהושע answered him, “The first of all the commands is, ‘Hear, O Yisra’ĕl, יהוה our Elohim, יהוה is one.

Mar 12:30  ‘And you shall love יהוה your Elohim with all your heart, and with all your being, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first command.

Mar 12:31  “And the second, like it, is this, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other command greater than these.”

Mar 12:32  And the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one Elohim, and there is no other besides Him.

Mar 12:33  “And to love Him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the being, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbour as oneself, is more than all the burnt offerings and offerings.”

Mar 12:34  And when יהושע saw that he answered wisely, He said to him, “You are not far from the reign of Elohim.” And after that no one was bold enough to question Him.

Luke 10:25-37

Luk 10:25  And see, a certain one learned in the Torah stood up, trying Him, and saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit everlasting life?”

Luk 10:26  And He said to him, “What has been written in the Torah? How do you read it?”

Luk 10:27  And he answering, said, “ ‘You shall love יהוה your Elohim with all your heart, and with all your being, and with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbour as yourself.’ ”

Luk 10:28  And He said to him, “You have answered rightly. Do this and you shall live.”1 Footnote: 1Mt. 19:17.

Luk 10:29  But he, wishing to declare himself righteous, said to יהושע, “And who is my neighbour?”

Luk 10:30  And replying, יהושע said, “A certain man was going down from Yerushalayim to Yeriḥo, and fell among robbers, who, both stripping and beating him, went away, leaving him half dead.

Luk 10:31  “And by a coincidence a certain priest was going down that way. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

Luk 10:32  “And likewise a Lĕwite also, when he came to the place, and seeing, passed by on the other side.

Luk 10:33  “But a certain Shomeronite, journeying, came upon him. And when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

Luk 10:34  and he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. And having placed him on his own beast, he brought him to an inn, and looked after him.

Luk 10:35  “And going out on the next day, he took out two pieces of silver, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Look after him, and whatever more you spend I shall repay you when I return.’

Luk 10:36  “Who, then, of these three, do you think, was neighbour1 to him who fell among the robbers?” Footnote: 1Mt. 17:18.

Luk 10:37  And he said, “He who showed compassion on him.” Then יהושע said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Romans 13:1-14

Rom 13:1  Let every being be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from Elohim, and the authorities that exist are appointed by Elohim.

Rom 13:2  So he who opposes the authority withstands the institution of Elohim, and those who withstand shall bring judgment on themselves.

Rom 13:3  For those ruling are an object of fear, not to good works, but to evil. Do you wish to be not afraid of the authority? Do the good, and you shall have praise from it,

Rom 13:4  for it is a servant of Elohim to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid, for it does not bear the sword in vain. For it is a servant of Elohim, a revenger to execute wrath on him who practises evil.

Rom 13:5  Therefore, it is necessary to be subject, not only because of wrath but also because of the conscience.

Rom 13:6  For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are servants of Elohim attending continually to these duties.

Rom 13:7  Render therefore to all what is due to them: tax to whom tax is due, toll to whom toll, fear to whom fear, respect to whom respect.

Rom 13:8  Owe no one any matter except to love one another, for he who loves another has filled the Torah.

Rom 13:9  For this, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other command, is summed up in this word, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.”

Rom 13:10  Love does no evil to a neighbour. Therefore, love is completion of the Torah.

Rom 13:11  And do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for us to wake up from sleep, for now our deliverance is nearer than when we did believe.

Rom 13:12  The night is far advanced, the day has come near. So let us put off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

Rom 13:13  Let us walk becomingly, as in the day, not in wild parties and drunkenness, not in living together and indecencies, not in fighting and envy,

Rom 13:14  but put on the Master יהושע Messiah, and make no provision for the lusts of the flesh.

Galatians 5:13-26

Gal 5:13  For you, brothers, have been called to freedom, only do not use freedom as an occasion for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

Gal 5:14  For the entire Torah is completed in one word, in this, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.”

Gal 5:15  And if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!

Gal 5:16  And I say: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not accomplish the lust of the flesh.

Gal 5:17  For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh. And these are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you desire to do.

Gal 5:18  But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under Torah.

Gal 5:19  And the works of the flesh are well-known, which are these: adultery,1 whoring, uncleanness, indecency, Footnote: 1Only Textus Receptus contains adultery.

Gal 5:20  idolatry, drug sorcery, hatred, quarrels, jealousies, fits of rage, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions,

Gal 5:21  envy, murders, drunkenness, wild parties, and the like – of which I forewarn you, even as I also said before, that those who practise such as these shall not inherit the reign of Elohim.1 Footnote: 11 Cor. 6:10.

Gal 5:22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustworthiness,

Gal 5:23  gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no Torah.

Gal 5:24  And those who are of Messiah have impaled the flesh with its passions and the desires.

Gal 5:25  If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Gal 5:26  Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Hebrews 9:11-28

Heb 9:11  But Messiah, having become a High Priest of the coming good matters, through the greater and more perfect Tent not made with hands, that is, not of this creation,

Heb 9:12  entered into the Most Set-apart Place once for all, not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood, having obtained everlasting redemption.

Heb 9:13  For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the defiled, sets apart for the cleansing of the flesh,

Heb 9:14  how much more shall the blood of the Messiah, who through the everlasting Spirit offered Himself unblemished to Elohim, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living Elohim?

Heb 9:15  And because of this He is the Mediator of a renewed covenant, so that, death having taken place for redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, those who are called might receive the promise of the everlasting inheritance.

Heb 9:16  For where a covenant is, it is necessary for the death of the covenanted one to be established.

Heb 9:17  For a covenant over those dead is firm, since it is never valid while the covenanted one is living.

Heb 9:18  Therefore not even the first covenant was instituted without blood.

Heb 9:19  For when, according to Torah, every command had been spoken by Mosheh to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,

Heb 9:20  saying, “This is the blood of the covenant which Elohim commanded you.”

Heb 9:21  And in the same way he sprinkled with blood both the Tent and all the vessels of the service.

Heb 9:22  And, according to the Torah, almost all is cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

Heb 9:23  It was necessary, then, that the copies of the heavenly ones should be cleansed with these, but the heavenly ones themselves with better slaughter offerings than these.

Heb 9:24  For Messiah has not entered into a Set-apart Place made by hand – figures of the true – but into the heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of Elohim on our behalf,

Heb 9:25  not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters into the Set-apart Place year by year with blood not his own.

Heb 9:26  For if so, He would have had to suffer often, since the foundation of the world. But now He has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the offering of Himself.

Heb 9:27  And as it awaits men to die once, and after this the judgment,

Heb 9:28  so also the Messiah, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, shall appear a second time, apart from sin, to those waiting for Him, unto deliverance.

James 2:1-9

Jas 2:1  My brothers, do not hold the belief of our Master יהושע Messiah, the Master of esteem, with partiality.

Jas 2:2  For if there should come into your meeting a man with gold rings, in a splendid robe, and there should also come in a poor one dressed in rags,

Jas 2:3  and you pay attention to the one wearing the splendid robe and say to him, “You sit here in a good place,” and say to the poor one, “You stand there,” or, “Sit here by my feet,”

Jas 2:4  have you not discriminated among yourselves, and become judges with wicked thoughts?

Jas 2:5  Listen, my beloved brothers: Has Elohim not chosen the poor of this world, rich in belief and heirs of the reign which He promised to those who love Him?

Jas 2:6  But you have shown disrespect towards the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts?

Jas 2:7  Do they not blaspheme that good Name by which you are called?

Jas 2:8  If you truly accomplish the sovereign law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself,” you do well,

Jas 2:9  but if you show partiality, you commit sin, being found guilty by the Torah as transgressors.

1 Peter 1:13-16

1Pe 1:13  Therefore, having girded up the loins of your mind, being sober, set your expectation perfectly upon the favour that is to be brought to you at the revelation of יהושע Messiah,

1Pe 1:14  as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts in your ignorance,

1Pe 1:15  instead, as the One who called you is set-apart, so you also should become set-apart in all behaviour,

1Pe 1:16  because it has been written, “Be set-apart, for I am set-apart.”

Num 6:22  And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying,

Num 6:23  “Speak to Aharon and his sons, saying, ‘This is how you bless the children of Yisra’ĕl. Say to them:

Num 6:24  “יהוה bless you and guard you;

Num 6:25  יהוה make His face shine upon you, and show favour to you;

Num 6:26  יהוה lift up His face upon you, and give you peace.” ’

Num 6:27  “Thus they shall put My Name on the children of Yisra’ĕl, and I Myself shall bless them.”
